WHY FREEZE BRAND?

The freeze brand, just below the mane on the right hand side of your horse's neck, is the only brand accepted by the Harness Racing Board to authenticate your horse as a purebred Standardbred.

Any Standardbred foal recorded with the HRB is required to have a freeze brand.

Without this brand, a Standardbred will not be accepted as a harness race horse (anywhere in Australia) and any progeny will also be ineligible to race.

The SPPHAV recognises the fact that some owners choose not to race their horses and may elect to not have them foal recorded with the HRB, and therefore not freeze branded.

The following conditions must be complied with to enable a purebred Standardbred horse that is not freeze branded into the SPPHAV.

1. For the first progeny of freeze branded sire and dam (Appendix Stock):

1.1 Copies of full documentation for both the sire and dam of the non freeze branded horse (foal) must be produced to authenticate the fact that a horse is a purebred Standardbred. This horse becomes known as Appendix Stock.

1.2 A copy of the service certificate must be provided with the application for registration.

1.3 Members of the SPPHAV Committee must be able to view the foal with its mother to authenticate the relationship. The viewing of a video or photographs that prove (without doubt) that the mother is (was) a freeze branded Standardbred may be considered for members living in remote areas.

1.4 The horse carries an owner's brand on the near shoulder and a brand, detailing foaling information, on the off shoulder. These brands and their position on the horse must be registered with the SPPHAV.

2. For progeny of Appendix Stock Standardbreds:

Subsequent progeny will only be accepted into the SPPHAV if:

2.1 All conditions at 1 (above) are satisfied for the Appendix Stock Standardbred.

2.2 The other parent (sire or dam) is a fully registered and therefore freeze branded Standardbred.

2.3 Copies of documentation for the registered (freeze branded) parent are provided to the SPPHAV.

A foal recording charge of $50.00, in addition to the normal registration fee, applies to all horses that do not have a freeze brand applying for registration with the SPPHAV.

Note: Horses that do not meet the above requirements may be registered as a partbred Standardbred with the SPPHAV.
